Marieke McKenna

Marieke McKenna (London, 1994) is a philosopher, historian, artistic researcher, writer and programme maker with Scottish, Irish & Dutch roots, based in The Hague. Within academia, Marieke, who holds BA and MSc degrees in philosophy, science and history, works on philosophy and history of science, mythology, ecological thinking, (process)metaphysics, phenomenology, physics, consciousness studies, (ethno)musicology and history of art. Her most recent research focuses on the history of how we view dreams and dreaming, for which she received a prestigious Junge Akademie grant for young academic talent, facilitated by The Max Planck Institute for History of Science in Berlin. Her research led to the creation of a 6-module course for London based platform Advaya and presentations at academic conferences. During her studies, she worked as a junior editor for Chicago University Press published History of Science journal Isis. Through her interdisciplinary – or as she calls it – ‘mycelial approach’, she has made a name for herself within the Dutch culture and art world as someone who synthesises knowledge and ideas into creative projects, having spoken, curated and performed for institutes such as Van Gogh Museum, BBC, Museum Beelden aan Zee, Conservatorium van Amsterdam and Crossing Border Literature festival. Outside academia Marieke works as an artist consultant, creative entrepreneur, curator, and award-winning programme maker, frequently exploring the intersection of intellectual and artistic research. She has her own weekly music radio programme on Dutch National Radio NPO 2, a music history podcast ‘Roots and Threads’ for NTR, is a DJ and works as a teacher at various conservatoires and universities.
